This story comes to us from TAGR family member Adele Coco Roberts.
Good Morning!
Paul I loved the call and I have a story to share.
Believing in yourself
My daughter when she was 4 years old got a high fever of 105.8.
Although she survived after a week in the hospital, her auditory nerve was damaged in both ears which could not be reversed.
She has only 20% hearing in one ear, 60% in the other.
Well she had to wear double hearing aids which she absolutely hated…especially in school.
As a matter of fact she deliberately use to take them off and leave them in the rain, but anyway
…children can be very very cruel and so can parents.
A very good friend of hers, her mom did not want her associating with my daughter cause she had to go in a “special class in school”.
…how she use to cry like she was a freak.
She would be on the school bus and kids would cover her ears, which made the hearing aids whistle and that hurt her.
To make a long story short…she had no self confidence..cried all the time which as a parent broke my heart!!
Anyway in a few months into the school year getting impossible and me getting disgusted with the school system, I decided ya know what ‘enough is enough.’
So after one bout of hysteria I sat her down, I said
…”you are gorgeous person and you have a disability…so what.
You have such talent and a heart of gold.
You can be and do anything you want to do if you put your mind to it.
You can only change what you can and your hearing is one you can not…so wipe your tears.
…you owe the world that much…
Look at Bon Jovi. (at the time he wore hearing aids) I said and he is a star.
Well guess what, enough of this…either you are gonna cry and do nothing cause you cry & you cry alone or,
…you are going to stand tall and show the world what you can do.
I do not want to hear your crying.
I want you to show the world what a super great person you are.
I believe in you and you need to believe in yourself.
Then you will see how people will love you for you.
If if they don’t that’s okay too!!
You need to do this and its okay.
(then I would go in the bathroom and cry my eyes out for her not to see..Tough love could be hard)
She asked me I will never forget it,
“Mommy you think so?”
I said, “no sweetie..I know so.”
Well PS – She decided to take up sports.
Scouts honor, she accelerated in every sport she did.
Basketball, softball and dance.
I never understood how she heard the music, got standing ovations and was awarded a trophy for the most to succeed.
That was 34 years ago.
Today she is very successful with Triplet girls and seriously NOTHING ever stands in her way.
You need to believe in you..
Well Paul, that’s my story.
Just wanted to share that.
Love you all!!
